Two Missouri Disaster Relief (MODR) teams recently returned from Jamaica after serving in recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa’s devastation last year. Despite weather challenges and travel delays, both teams faithfully completed a week of service as they repaired roofs on churches and homes impacted by the storm.
The first team, led by Richard Brummitt, served during the last week of February. Their work included installing a new, sturdy roof on a schoolroom at Elderslie Baptist Church, allowing children to gather there for the first time since the hurricane. The team shared how meaningful it was to hear “the laughter of the children as they met together for the first time since the hurricane. They now have a dry and solid roof on their school room so they can continue to learn and grow in their knowledge of the Lord.”
Following immediately afterward, the second team—led by Steve Russell—continued the mission into the first week of March. Across the two deployments, volunteers completed three to four roof repairs, restoring safe spaces for worship, learning, and family life.
MODR is grateful for the dedication of these volunteers who answered the call to serve. Their work reflects our ongoing commitment to sharing hope, meeting needs, and supporting communities long after the initial disaster response ends.
